Excruciating Fear
Panic Disorder, a Doctor and a Journey Back from Hell
Excruciating Fear describes my hellish journey through the labyrinth
of the mental health system getting to the place where I at last found
Dr. Harold Levinson, the man who made the discovery that some mental
illnesses do not have their origin in the mind of the patient or in
faulty thinking patterns. They have a physical cause at their base.
It walks the reader through the darkness I was shrouded in for eleven years thinking there was no way out of it and finding myself suicidal, convinced in the end that perhaps I was mentally ill and bound for an insane asylum.
Panic attacks can become a mental health problem if left untreated as the mind associates them with external circumstances and reinforces feelings of paranoia when a person is exposed to certain environments. This happened with my situation as a child and left me confused about what to do about them, as I was unaware of their cause.
There is now research which seems to indicate that those who have panic attacks are three times more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke especially if they are post-menopausal. With this in mind, finding a way to prevent them is critical as it could potentially save a person’s life.
It took courage for Dr. Levinson to step forward and make this discovery known and I am deeply and profoundly grateful to him for this.
